FOSS4G-Asia 2024

How a FOSS4G-Born Business Grew in Japan: The Journey of MIERUNE
12-17, 11:45–12:00 (Asia/Bangkok), Auditorium Hall 1

When considering the sustainability of open source as a future digital public good, the cycle of success and contribution in the business sector becomes crucial.

MIERUNE was born from the FOSS4G community in 2016 and has spent the past eight years solving client challenges as a location-based systems integrator, growing steadily in the Japanese market.
Through these business activities, MIERUNE not only actively gives back to the FOSS4G community—both technically and financially—but also creates local employment for GIS engineers, helping to build a sustainable society.

In this presentation, we will share specific examples of the challenges we have faced to support the growth and development of FOSS4G companies in the Asian region, thereby contributing to the sustainability of the whole community.

Overview

Founded in 2016 from the Japanese FOSS4G community, MIERUNE has built a unique position in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This presentation will detail MIERUNE’s journey to success in the Japanese market, the challenges it faced, and the initiatives it adopted to overcome them.
We have been actively involved in various open-source projects and organizations in multiple ways. Our contributions include sponsoring prominent initiatives such as QGIS and MapLibre, serving on committees like OSGeo, OSGeoJP, QGIS User Group Japan, and MapLibre. We also organize community events, frequently share insights online, and release code and data to the public.
We believe that these activities contribute not only to business strategy benefits but also significantly to the sustainability of the FOSS4G community. In this presentation, we aim to share detailed examples of these activities as insights for like-minded community members in the Asian region.

This presentation is intended for GIS engineers, OSS developers, business executives, startup founders, and those aiming to develop businesses using OSS. It is particularly valuable for those looking to contribute to the community and build sustainable businesses through the use of FOSS4G.
