Scrollytelling the 53 Stations of Tōkaidō: An Interactive Journey Through Japan’s Historic Route
12-17, 10:00–10:15 (Asia/Bangkok), Auditorium Hall 1

The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō (東海道五十三次, Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi) are iconic rest areas along the historic coastal road that once connected modern-day Tokyo to Kyoto. This route is renowned for its Ukiyo-e (浮世絵) prints, a distinctive form of Japanese painting that flourished during the Edo period from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

To bring this historic route to life, we have developed a web-based “scrollytelling” experience (a combination of “scrolling” and “storytelling”) that invites users to interactively traverse this historic route via a dynamic map. You can explore it yourself at https://sorami.dev/tokaido-scrollytelling/ !

This project harnesses Mapbox GL JS and a variety of open-source technologies, including Turf.js, Svelte, UnoCSS, and Scrollama. These tools, combined with open data for the route, stations, and accompanying artworks, enable us to offer a rich and engaging experience. All data and code are available at https://github.com/sorami/tokaido-scrollytelling.

In this talk, we will explore the potential and challenges of scrollytelling with maps—a contemporary method of content presentation enabled by modern digital tools. We will discuss the strengths and limitations of this storytelling style, examine various technologies available for creating such experiences, and detail the development process behind our project.
