PWAGIS QGIS Plugins Development : Lessons learn to Free Open Source Solutions for Geospatial

This talk will explore the transition from proprietary nature to PWAGIS QGIS plugins, focusing on the limitations experienced with previous solutions of proprietary software, the challenges encountered during development, and the innovative functionalities introduced in the new plugins. Attendees will gain insights into the practical aspects of moving from a legacy system to an open-source solution, highlighting both the obstacles and the opportunities this transition presents.


PWA stand for Provincial Waterworks Authoriry in Thailand, it has national wide coverage area by functional. Based on its mission, PWA has to provide clean water for domestic use in the area beyond BMA and vicinity. Of course, mapping technologies was operating over 20 years in GIS department.

Development can shown in 2 generation.
1st Generation, PWA was adopted commercial software names Mapinfo Professional as mapping tools with additional programming language names Mapbasic to special purposes following PWA mapping functions.

2nd Generation, start on 2024. PWA has decided to shift from commercial software to pure open source software due to struggling with cost of licensing and maintenance (est. over 10million thb/year). This generation has QGIS Plugins for data editing that need high precision and accuracy while Web Application for data visualization and more compromise data creation module.
